CHINESE METAL DEALER FAILS.
LARGE SUMS INVOLVED.
Ay event which has caused con- siderable surprise in the metals market and has had an adverse effect on Chinese business happen- ed during the last few days. A Chinese dealer of only a few years standing has failed. Just before it was known, he managed to collect over $40,000 in payment or deposits for payment for delivery of gomis and he has left the Colony.
Some time ago, a lot of round steel bars arrived in the colony consigned to this dealer. The goods had been inported direct, i.e., without having to go through foreign firm and the documents were with one of the banks for collection. It is stated that the shipment cost in the vicinity of £11-15-0 per ton, CIF Hongkong

As he had heard adverse reports of the firm the buyer re- fused to pay up unless the broker guaranteed that he would get his goods. In this case the broker is said to have parted with $800 in cash and a cheque for $600.

AMERICAN FLOUR.
Three Chinese flour dealers are selling forward" for delivery in September at prices below to-day's quotations and prices are dropping. It is reported that the Green Diamond Flag" brand of American flour has been sold for August/ September delivery at $2.70 per sack as against over $2.80, to-day's price for this grade of flour. Very few sales of 'spot" cargo have been effected and the tone of the market is dull.
