BRITAIN'S NEW PREMIER. STANLEY BALDWIN APPOINTED.

METEORIC POLITICAL CAREER.

HOW THE KING MADE HIS CHOICE.

(Reuter's Service to the China Mall)

London, May 22.

Mr. Stanley Baldwin, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been summoned to Buckingham Palace.

It is offically announced that Mr. Stanley Baldwin has been sp-

Later. pointed Premier

The Rt. Hon. Mr. Stanley Baldwin, P. C., is a business nian whose commercial training has stood him in good stead. After a preliminary. training on the Worcestershire County Council he entered Parliament as a Unionist of the Chamberlain school in February, 1908, at a by- election in the Bewdley Division of Worcester hire, caused by the death of his father, Mr. Arthur Baldwin. He acted as Parliamentary private secretary to Mr. Bonar Law, and early in 1917 was appointed a Junior Lord of the Treasury. In the summer he was invited to become Joint Financial Secretary to the Treasury, as Sir Hardman Lever had agreed to stay in America, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his Budget speech paid a warm tribute to the assistance he had received from the member for the Bewdley Division, whose speeches showed that he pos- sessed much financial ability and a special capacity for dealing with figures. Six months ago when the Bonar Law Cabinet was formed ho was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. Mr. Baldwin, who is now fifty-six-years old, was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge.]

LONDON, May 22. Mr. Stanley Baldwin, arriving at Downing Street from the Palace, told the pressmen: I want your prayers more than your congratulations."'"

HOW THE CHOICE WAS MADE.

OBSTACLES AGAINST LORD CURZON.

LONDON, May 22.

Nevertheless it is freely stated that Sir Robert Harno is likely to accept the Chancellorship of the Exchequer, though this will involve him in resign- ing many important business appointments which he has fately accepted,

It is understood that Lord Curzon is willing to remain at the Foreign Office.

TERROR FOR HECKLERS.

7

When Mr. Baldwin was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, the City chorussed its approval at the selection. Mr. Baldwin is a prominent business man, and his budget statement, accurate and prac- tical without superficial brilliancy, strengthened his reputation.

The King discussed the political situation witri Va

The difficulties in Lord Curzon's path to the premiershipare indicated in independent statements issued to-day authoritatively expressing the views of the Labour headquarters and what is vaguely described as the large and growing section of the Conservative Party opposing the appointment of a peer to the premiership...

The chief argument of both is that the official Opposition, namely Labour, is in the House of Commons, not in the House of Lords.

The Labour statement declares that if a peer is appointed, the Labour Party will use every political device to precipitate dissolution.

KING'S HURRIED RETURN

LONDON, May 22,

Mr. Stanley Baldwin's summons to the Palace followed a forty minutes' visit from Lord Stamford bam to Lord Curzon. Mr. Baldwin remained an

hour at the Palace.

MR. BONAR LAW'S FUTURE.

LONDON, May 23 Mr. Bonar Law, writing from Glasgow to the Unionist Association, says he presumes there is no objection to his continuing as member for Central Glasgow, at least in the present Parliament, though it is very unlikely he will be able to attend this session.

GERMAN DYESTUFFS SEIZED.

FRENCH GRAB: TRAIN.

PARIS, May 22.

A train containing "thousands of tons of dyestuffs was seized as the Badische Aniline factory, Ludwigshafen, and sent to France on Sunday.

A further trainload is shortly being despatched to Belgium.

Ludwigshafen is an industrial town in Bavaria,]

Before the King saw Lord Stamfordham the latter spent many hours conferring with the Con servative leaders. There was a meeting of the latter at Downing Street in the moming at which unanimity was reached regarding the choice of Premier. After the appointment had been made Colonel Jackson and Sir Reginald Hall, Chairman the and Deputy Chairman, respectively of the Unionist Central Office, told the interviewers they were delighted with Mr. Baldwin's selection, adding that the sole reason the leaders preferred him to Lord Curzon was that His Majesty's Opposition was in the House of Commons, not in the House of Lords,
