The Coroner-Do you know the cause of that?
Witness-It was on account of the loss of our daughter.
Asked if her husband was heavy smoker, she said he had been a very heavy cigarette smoker, but it affected his heart, so the doctor had stopped him smoking.

"Submarine Cable Laying and Repairing was the subject of a lecture by Capt. S. G. Gorton, of H. M. cable ship "Kilmun," at the Plymouth Port Library recently.,

the question of a trans-Atlantic cable was broached many of the loading scientists of the day, appalled by the magnitude of the task, declared its fulfilment impos sible, and urged all sorts of mathematical reasons to justify their opinion. But a faithful few carried on with the project, and on November 12, 1856, the promoters": submitted their plans to a meeting which willingly subscribed to wards the necessary funds for the undertaking. The lecturerdescrib ed the first unsuccessful attempt to lay the cable by H.MS. "Agamem non" and the "Niagara," an Ameri- can vessel. In the next year the at- tempt was repeated with greater.
success.
In New York the completion of the enterprise was greeted with; public rejoicings, which culmina- ed in the Townhall being burnt down. Rejoicings in England were prevented by the News that after 20 days signals had failed to cross the ocean. Eight years elapsed, during which electrical knowledge-ad- vanced by leaps and bounds, and in 1866 the second Atlantic cable was laid, the first open to the public.
The lecturer Illustrated his. description of a modern cable by lantero alides. The laying of a cable was not such a simple opera- tion as many people supposed, he said, in spite of modernventions.
