STOLEN GAINSBOROUGHS!

ROMANTIC LETTER FROM PARIS,

There has been a curious sequel to the theft of the two Gains- boroughs from Benham Park, near Newbury, Berks, on March 16.

Mr. Cecil Sutton, the owner of the two pictures, which are family portraits, has just received a letter from Paris, written by some one who alleges that the Gainsboroughs were offered in his presence to his employer, an art dealer.

The following it a translation of the letter, which was in French, on two blue cards enclosed in an envelope:

Sir-I am in the employment of an art dealer in a small way of business. I have had a quarrel with him and want to get another situation, but have not enough money to leave him without aid, For that reason, and that reason alone, I am obliged to remain strictly anonymous.

My employer yesterday, when I was present,was visited by twomen speaking English and French, who | offered him the Gainsboroughs stolen from your house. He had not enough money to buy them, and as he thought it would be dangerous to keep them in France, proposed that they should be con- veyed to America.

This morning my master and one of the Englishmen left · for Marseilles. They mean to embark in a sailing vessel for America, though they say they are going

an unknown destination." propose, therefore, myself to go to Marsellles, and, with the help of a private detective recover the stolen. pictures, which will be placed at your disposal,

HIS CONDITIONS.

As I have not the money needed for my own expenses or for the cost of the detective, I require you to comply with the following con- ditions

1. You must send to the address; which I give, in an ordinary unreg- istered letter £50 in banknotes..

2. You must swear on your word of honour not yourself to attempt to discovermy identity nor instruct anyone else to do so...'

3. You must promise to pay £100 to me at an address which I shall send you five days after the pictures. have been placed in your possess ion.

** If you faithfully fulfil these con. ditions I swear that next Sunday the pictures shall be in the hand of | the detective, of whose address you will be immediately informed. These plans may seem mysterious, but I cannot run any risk of being mixed up with the business. In a week or two the pictures may be on their way to America.

I will wait till Friday for your reply.

The letter has been handed to the local police, who regard it as an attempt to extract money from Mr. Sutton, and think that its author is 2.30pm.some French thief who has read in. 3.10 p.m. the newspapers about the theft of 5pm.the Gainsboroughs.

THE ROBBERY.

The theft of the Gainsboroughs from Benham Park was one of the most remarkable burglaries of re- cent years. The portraits are of a woman, and they were removed from their frames with great care by the thieves, who had apparent- ly entered the house to steal them, as little else was taken.
