ASYLUM DISASTER.

TERRIBLE FIRE SCENES.

Terrifying scones marked the fire which swept through a wing of the Manhattan State Hospital for the Insane in the early hours of Sunday morning, burned twenty-five men to death, and exposed hundreds of others, clad only in their night clothes, to an icy wind and a temperature slightly above zero. " In the wing of the hospital where the fire started there were nearly 200 inmates, most of them violently insane Many of them were. incinerated in their barred and bolted cells with- out a chance of life. The hospital is situated on Ward's Island in the middle of the river, and the only means of reaching it from New York City is by an antiquated ferry boat. The firemen consequently arrived late, after the collapse of a portion of the roof had cut off the escape from a number of cells whose inmates were seen.. clinging to the window-bars shriek | ing; grimacing; and tugging madly. as the flames erept closer. The fire was discovered at 5.15 a.m. by Michael Campbell, the atten dant, a retired fireman, who im mediately gave the alarm, and began playing a hose on the flames, while other attendants rushed to clear the cells. As the fire siren. shrieked pandemonium: broke out, and the released inmate's rushed. through the smoke and flames in all directions, out into the frigid night, to wander around the island until

Mr. Campbell, who stood by his hose until the ceiling collapsed upon Thim, says he will never forget the appearance of the men who poured Into the corridor as their doors were unlocked.Some were.. leering, some grinning" says Campbell, some cringing and their arms waving. Some were madder than ordinarily, and some were dancing about wildly laugh- ing as the flames encircled them. With the arrival of help, the survivors were herded together and taken to safety, but by this time the whole island, with its 6,700 insane-inmates, was aroused- Fin an uproar, which continued until the fire was subdued, long after daybreak.
