the port of Shanghai' will stretch from its present position right down to Woosung, with wharves, docks and jetties lining the river. Thie will not be in our time, and evon with a good imagination it is hard ta visualize the dream of Greater Shanghai. But it will "come. Shanghai's position, and its im menee shipping facilities, backed by the tremendous trade that is daily
pouring in and out of the port, are bound to lead to extensive develop- ments.
This little sketch of Shanghai was one of the observations offered by Captain H. G. Myhre, the Harbour Master of the Chinese Maritime Custome Service who has just re tired.
Captain Myhre joined the service in 1888 as junior officer on the Revenue steamer "Chuer Tino," and after a long and varied career in all departments of the service, he was appointed Harbour] Master of Shangbai in 1917.
HARBOUR DEVELOPMENT.
During his service on the China conat he has watched the develop- mont of Shanghai, and as Harbour Master he saw the culmination of the labours of the harbour and con- servancy angineers who, after a long session, drew up a schome for the development of the port in accord- ance with modern port methods and the тенонгсен which Shanghai possesses. Captain Myhre leaves the service convinced that when those recommendations have been carried out the Greater, Shanghai will be much nearer achievement.

how large and expansive the port might grow. The Yangtsze cargo and passenger trade, and the direct supervision of trade interests in the trade centre of Shanghai would always counteract any overland transbipment, or construction of a terminal port at Woosung, which might tend to attract the trade centre bearer Woosung.
CONTINUOUS PROMOTION. Captain Hans Gustav Myhre, is a Norwegian, and was born at Hor ten, Norway, in 1869. He first joined the Merchant Service and sailed on British and Norwegian ships between the years 1878 and 1822. In the latter year he joined the Norwegian Navy, as midship- man and was later sub-lieutenant. His first connection with the Chir nese Maritime Customs, which led him to continuoua promotion until he was appointed Harbour Master of China's greatest port; wee in February, 1888, when, in London he joined as third officer on the Revenue steamer "Chuen Tiso." He came out to China and in addi- tion to service on the "Chuen Tino". be served on the "Kai Pan" and the Lakin, both revenue shipa.
