The recent booni in local sugar' prices has caused a departure from old-established custom. Hitlerto, Hongkong's imports of sugar have been chiefly, from Java and, the Philippines but the s.s. "Trieste brought a large shipment of sugar from Singapore which is not the entrepôt for a producing centre. This lot had originally been sent from Jaya for F. M. S. consumption and was bought by Hongkong merchants who were unable to file their orders in Java This is the first occasion. on which Java sugar has come to Hongkong via Singapore,
