Is there any human institution that presents a wore harmoniogs combination of bad economics and snobbery than does tipping. There have been many ingenious attempts | o fix a lair wage in various trades and professions; but no pisca rata, time rato or combination of the two can be applied to those workers whose
reward depends upon the caprice of a series of continually changing employers. Yet it is not altogether surprising that several wellknown man who have just been interviewed on the subject by a London evening paper have given quite conflicting opinions. For the evil, if obvious, is still entwined intimately in our whole scheme of things.

A union of, for instance, hotel employees might go some way toward lessening the evil, but it could not at present go all the way. For tipping is only one symptom of a lamentable rooiat system that is blowly being improved. Still wherever laboat is properly organised wages are removed from this degrading and uncertain foundation, and there is no reason why anch organisation should not be extended.
