NO MORE PUZZLE ADDRESSES.

LETTERS MUST BE, DIRECTED. PROPERLY.

• No more "pazzle addrousce" is the Ust of the CPO. Letters addressed in unorthodox fashion will in fatura be returned to their fenders.

The department which used to spend

a lot of time and prided itself on the saccesons it achieved in deciphering apparently unintelligibla hieroglyphics |—and occasionally pictures—has been

drastically cut down.

The "puzzle address" office cost the taxpayer more money than it was worth. It sorved a useful parpre when we were not so educated a people as we are supposed to be to day, when all sorts of weird speriment of handwritinga bad to be interpreted somehow or other, but the anthorities think there is no need for such things

now.

+

This will put a stop to the pranke of schoolboys who addressed their lettera in Latin as a "try on for the Post Office, and to the wiles of the joker who obacured the intended de-tination of his postal packet in some design or conundrum.

"LORMAIN, MANCHOUSE.

"

At one time the people whose job it was to discover concealed addressce resorted to all sorts of devices to help them out of thair difficulties.

They were allowed to use any book which came in hond for the purpose, and had many ingenious methods of | ferreting out hidden meanings, but all

that has now stopped.

Instructions have been issued that the only books of reference they are to consultara the official Post Office guide and local directories.

"We ehall, of course, still do our best to deliver letters addressed by obviously illiterate peoplo, and we have sufficient staff in the blind division' to cope with such cones," an official of the Post Office told the Evening News,

"Similarly we havo men who know every langusgo, 30 that lettere addressed in foreign languages will be delivered.

Some of the "puzzle addreses" which the Post Office has succeeded in unravelling are preserved in tracing outlines in books,

One latter addressed to "Lormair. MLehouse," was delivered to the | Lord Mayor at the Mansion House,

All the alphabet, with the excep ti in of the letter "L" was scrawled over another envelope, which the Past Ofice discovered was intended for a Mr. Nowell.
