LAUSANNE TREATY.

REJECTION NOT UNEXPECTED..

I

LONDON, March 7. ⠀ The rejection of the Lausanne treaty was not altogether unexpected. In well-informed quarters in London it is believed that Britain, while still maintaining her stand on the terms of the Treaty is not unwilling to agree to re-open negotiations if the Turks give evidence of a real desire to reach a

settlement.

THE TURKISH TERMS.

CONSTANTINOPLE, March 7, Towards the end of the debate in the Assembly on the Lausanne Treaty a motion was tabled signed by 150 deputies declaring that in the event of the complete independence of Turkey regarding financial and economic ad ministrative questions being safeguarded the Government should sign the peace but a motion was finally adopted authorising the Government to pursue negotiations on the following bases: abolition of capitulations; postpone mead of a settlement of economio and financial questions, also Mosul the abandonment of Karagatch, the acceptance of other clances drafted by the Turkish delegation and the eraction of reparations from Greece.

LONDON, March 7.

The question of legislativo restriction of rubber from Malays and Ceylon was argued before the commercial committee of the House of Commous.

Mr. Hinde, the Chairman of the India Rabber Association, on behalf of the manufacturers, contended that restriction placed a premium on inefficient administration at the plantation. The reply to the contortion that the planter was not able to produce rubber ander Tid, way that the planter had never tried.

Bir Frank Swettenham, on behalf of the growers, denied that the administration of the plantations was inefficient and ridionled the idea that rabber could be produced at 6d.

Mr. Eric Miller, who headed a deputation for the growers recently visiting the United Statesa, said that with one exception American manufacturners had agreed upon restriction. They had not demurred at the extra price involved.
