WESTERN CIVILISATION.

ITS VALUE TO CHINA.

There are two forces writes "L T. F." in the Yellow Dragon (the official organ of Queen's College) working in. the affairs of the world: one is conservative, the other, progressive. The former tanda to adhere to what already exists, the latter, to purane) what is Low; the former is reciding, the latter is pushing to the front. To the former the civilisation""China gors; to the latter, that of the West. China is too traditional. Before the days of Alexander the Crest. Chian had already formed itrolf and set its fest in the way in which it was still walking in the dye of 1900 A D. Invaders and dynastics had come and

gone, but the routine of life of its civilisation remained unchanged. The West is progres- sive, and out of a disatisfaction with the days of yate, it tries to make a new era for itself, and the resultant civilization is such as was unprece dented in any age, unconceived by any of our benighted fathers, mai vellons in sciences, magnificent in materialism, omnipotent in power, | and brilliant in intellects..

The value of the western civilisa tion to China is great, and it in felt in this way: the civilisation of the West acte as a stimulant, a com petitor, a reformer, and a better- half. By coming into contact with the West, China snema to bel awakened to ite infeziority and draw- backs. By comparing its own stagn- ation and deterioration with the advancement and progress of the West, Chins is roused from its torpor, By standing in the light of the mar vels and magnificence of the west Chica is first aware of its own dark. ness of tradition at 3 mediocrity. By wondering at the power and majesty of the development of sciences and materialism, China is made to realise the disadvant go of a partial and un- developed culture of virtue, literature, and arts. It is beyond doubt that the wedding of the conservatiem of Lone with the progressive spirit of the other, and the blending of a culture of morality and ait, wib a develop- ment of science and materialium, will, hand in und; produce an offspring of an all-round development and a per- fect and u.iversally cherished civilis- ation.

DIPLOMA MILK is the shonpest and best and has been analysed as healthful, nourishing and strength-giving food.

China was already well started in the Tacc of culture while the westerners were still under a canopy of dark and openetrated mist-of ignorance and barbarity. China has produced a profusion of artistic worki, poetry, and philosophy, but all these have been preserved as standards and models upon which improvement and development wore Dever under taken. Paper, gan-powder, and the Compass were at invented in China |but wil these arts bat ́deteriorated by age. There was much-isolated obear- Tation, ingensity, and invention. The Chinese organised the system of record asd co operation in ingenuity that has given the westerners modern scienoc. Chiness civilisation is organised for pesce, and the wastern civilisation possesses much in sciences and water- isliem for which China never' cared, but on the other hand, Chins has developed historical and critical literatura, a courtesy of demeanour, a code of virtue, and a people of high | quality. The value of the western rivibration to China is beyond estima- tion in the introduction of the mai- vellous inventions, to China—the decies which barness the forces of Nature, which fallitate the means of ommunication, which adorn the Western civilisation to Chins would daily life, which command supremaoy not only be felt within the country, in warlare, an. which are so powerful but also throughout the whole world; and omnipotent that they create pride nos ouly in the present age, but also in the bosom of every individual and in the generations to come. make China a bolter and fitter place tlive.in.
