THE ORIGINAL "GLIDER
WONDERS OF AUSTRALIAN
BOOMERANGS.
Some forty years ago my duties as a Government engineer took me to the north east corner of New South Wales, on the Clarence River, where there could still be seen the remnants of a native tribe who made their own
weapons and need them even in tribal disputes, writes Charles Gregory in an exchange.
I had great opportunitis of study. ing the flight of that truly marvellous weapon, the "Ecomerang," which may be briefly described as a bent piece of wood curved to an angle of 90deg, to 120deg.
Its length verica from 2 to 3 feet, and its weight is often two pounds, as it is composed of a hard, compact wood, to which fire has been applied to extract all moisture. One side is flat and the other convex, and along. the convex side juny a sharp edge.
The longest fight-out and return -that I measured was 180 yaids, and it is impossible to believe that this long serial journey was wholly due to the impulse of the thrower,
Now that I have read much about *** gliders,” it appears clear to me that the boomerang develops all the gli ding propensities found in the gliding 'planes, and more.
The best thrower I over saw would plant his feet firmly on the ground and, facing the wind, eelect a tall tree Pome two hundred yards distant, Then, holding his boomerang in bis right hand vertically, he throw it with all his might so that for a hundred yards it travelled some six feet above the ground.
At that distance it would rice as though on waves of air until it attain
ed a height of 60 to 80 feet, circle tha
RACY REMINISCENCES.
BAILIFFS BY THE BEDSIDE.-
MONEYLENDER AT PRAYERO.
нава
Racy reminiscences of Victorian sport and cooiety in many aspects, with pungent criticism of accepted conventions, give spice and interest to Mr. Arthur Sebright's| book, "A Glance into the Past,"
which is published (Nosh and Gray- eon, 10s. 6d.) in wail week.
He puts moneylending on the level ol speculative banking, and ranks the Turf as the "most bonourable and the most-respectable" of the great commercial businesses of the country.
Of his school days Mr. Sebright says: "I believe I em accurate in saying that I was the youngest boy who ever went to Eton."
An event that impressed itself on his memery, and otherwise, was
the flogging of me by Dr. Dúrn ford, whom Etonians will remem-, ber as Judy Durnford, for fercibly kiesing the housemaid. As I was only ten years of age I considered the penishment rather superfluous. On uroking his portmanteaux a young friend of his, Montagu Loftus, & son of Lord Loftus, at that time our Ambassador at St. Petersburg [Petrograd ], had a peculiar manneF of conveying his "empties" to the area. He simply throw them out of the window."

DANUED WITH THE QUEEN. Having failed to pass into the Army, at the age of 19 I found myself in the position of a gentle- man at large about town looking about five years older than I was, and although still a minɛr, yet able to burrow money. rej ayable on my coming of age, every shilling of which I repaid, immediately after my twenty-first birthday.
As a young man Mr. Sebright high bianches of the tree, and recalle with pride: "I had the gradually descending in ita flight; honour of dancing with hor Majesty return to the thrower and fall at his at her first ball, che being then feet
Princess Mary of- Teos. It was at Lord Hopetoun's.
:
I believe I see now what greatly puzzled me then-namely, how this Weapon by mere propulsion performed so great a journey, as it undoubtedly used the wind against it as a means of climbing, just as the gliding plane does
In fact the native performed the daty obtained by the glide down hill
to obtain impetus, plus the pilot's
skill in changing the centre of gravity

Country house parties in those days, with few exceptions, were not
cursed with that most appalling of pastimes, cards, which frequently. nowadays spoils all social entertains ments add which is, in my opinion, the mest boring, pastime devised by man... Owing to this pestilential habit,_the_art_of conversation bas nearly died out, while the harm and misery it has caused among men and also among married women, and even young gizle, is simply jucalculable.
"I have at various periods of my life," Mr. Setright says," had a great deal to do with London money. lenders."
-TURF-HONOUR.-
So far as the professional money- lenders themselves are concerned, I have no hestitation in saying that Eome of them are the most nomitiga- ted scorndrals. On the other hand, there are others who are perfectly straightforward, fair dealing men, who treat their clients very well ec long as their clients treat them in the came way.
One of them with whom he had dealingo
always began the day with a long spell of prayer, and if you came to hia office before a certain hour you would be told, “Hush, Mr.——is praying." Whenever I received this information I knew that the int rest would be ex ́ra hot.
Mr. Sebright strongly upholds Turi morality ::
Where can you show me any. other business in the world where huge sums of money pass from hand to hand nearly the whole year round without any legal obligation being catered into on either side, secured by no contract except an
honourable understanding indicated by a few short words or a nod of
the brad?
All things considered, I have no besitation in saying that I consider the Turf the most honourable and the most respectable of all the great) commercial bacinemes of this country.
