PRESIDENT WILSON,

MR. LAURENCE HOUSMAN'S

MIND READING.

The dialogue portrait which Mr. Laurence Hoarman achieved with success in "Angels and Ministers' last year is again the literary method employed in bis "Dethronemente" (Cape, 7. 08.), and with the same telling effect.

The "dethronements" in these im- aginary portraits are those of Joseph Chamberlain when he was so tragio ally disabled, of Parnell after bis undefended divorce suit which con demned him and "Kitty O'Shea," and of ex-President Wilson on his return to the United States from Marseilles. The latter suggests itself an a particularly shrewd piece of "mird reading."

From his window in Washington Mr. Wileon, leaning heavily upon the "proudly protecting arm of bis friend, Mr. Joseph Tomalty," bas been watching the

triumphal "inauguration" of Mr. Harding 98 bis successcr in the Presidency of the United States.

Ex-President Where I failed was in getting the loyalty and co operation of theen who didn't agree with me so thoroughly as you did... I failed I caught some good men, but I let others go. There was fize material to my hand which I didn't recognise.. Tamulty: But you bad a great fol. lowing, Governor. You had a wonder fal reception when you got to Paria.

This has been arother weak of active trading in the cotton markets, America being again responsible for

All positions aro advanced, but the relatively sharp appreciation of spot and near months have been the main feature of the week. At the close a somewhat less aggressive tone is evident, na operators are waiting for the National Ginners' report on the American crop up to the end of last month, which is now due for publication. Of the Indian markets, Calcutta and Bombay are most active, offering for dhooties, sbirtinga and nainsooks.. A small trade has been done for Singapore and Java. Egypt is goister and also the Home Trade, and for Bouth America only trifling lots have been sold. Falling European exchanges have almost effectually stopped new business for the Continent.
