News eached here by cable last night, of the death of a very old re- aldent of Hongkang, Mr. J. Y. V. Vernon. The deceased who was in his 71st year of age passed peaceful- ly away in a nursing home in Varese, Ataly, on November 4.

The late Mr. Vernon, who was the founder of the well-known firm of Mosers. Vernon and Smyth, left the Colony 12 years ago after about 30 years' residence here, and he and Mra. Vernon, who survives him sot tied in the South of France. They mare a health trip to Italy a few months ago. Mr. Veruon entered * the

nursing recently but his condition was not considered serious. The sudden nows of his death came therefore as a great ahook to his many friends. Mra. Vention was with him when he died.
