LORD ROSEBERY,

MENTMORE GIVEN TO HIS SON.

At a luncheon given by the Earl of Rosebery to his tenants at Mormore, near Cheddington, Buckinghamshire, it was announced that he had transferred his Montmore estate to his son and heir, Lord Dalmeny

The Montmore extate covers come 8,000 sores. The magnificent man- sion, which was built in 1851 by Baron Meyer de Rothschild, whose daughter Lord Rosebery married, commands wonderful views of the vale of Aylesbury and the surrounding country.

Under the care of Baron Moyer de Rothschild it became one of the greatest of English storehouse of Italian art. The house was the early home of Miss Hannah de Rothschild, who became Lady Rosebery, and within its spacious and splendid rooms the entertained the most distinguished people of the day.

The Earl of Rosebery, who was bora 75 years ago, was the son of Lord Archibald Dalmeny, M.P., and is the fifth Earl of Rosebery. In 1878 he married Hannah, the only daughter and heiress of Baron Meyer de Rothschild, and became through his marriage the owner of Mentmore. He has one son, Lord Dalmeny, and two daughters.

For the past quarter of a century Lord Rosebery has been one of thoas towering figures which inhabit the fields of memory.. His only public appearances bave been made between the covers of a series of scholarly books which have illuminated modern understanding of the political world of the past century and a half. He is still remem bered by many the Prime Minister of England who won the Derby (with Ladas) during bis term of office, but to the majority of the students of affairs, be is known as an incomparable biographer of the mighty dead. Lord Dalmeny in 1908 married Dorothy, the younger daughter of Lord Benry Grosvenor, but be obtain ed a divorce in 1919.

From 1905 to 1907, Lord Dalmeny was the captain of the Surrey County Cricket team. Ho sat in the House of Commons as Liberal member for Midlothian from 1900 to 1910. He served in the European war from 1914, until 1918, and was wounded and awarded the D.8.0. nad the M.C. |

The position of women in China, Baya the Christian Science Monitor is changing at a pace which seema phenomenat in view of the cnturies of completo and absolute suljection which woman has been held through- out the East.

This freedom is found, of courte, largely, in the cities where foreign influence has ben fait, but with the transitions of the past once broken, it is surely only a question of time before women will become emancipat- ed throughout Chino.

In the treaty ports and in Peking Chinese girls are constantly eeen daning in the ballreoms of the foreign hotela, and they associate with men with all the naturalness of the girle of America. Such a sight would have been 'unbelievable to the observer of a very few years ago.

Schools for girla bave long since been established by the missionaries, with the Government soon following uit. Under the terms of the return to Obina by the United States of the Boxer indemnity, a certain number of girls have bean sont to America for their education.

To-day Peking basis woman's normal school which is tarning out teachers who have gone through a curriculum of both Chinese and foreign studies.

In the Department of English. | typewriting has only recently teen taken up and a sumber of typewriters obtained to teach these girls how to uss the touch system with the. matimum of efficiency, while still more-up-to date, is the fact that the Department of Physical Education has now obtained a number of bicycles with the purpose of teaching| thaa future teachers how to ride.
