WHISKY MENS RUSH.

ESCAPE FROM LINER UNDER

FIRE.

Under the noses of 100 Customs in- spectats and pier polico six men went on board the White Star Liner "Homeric on her arrival in dock at New York from Southampton and During the examination of the luggage of passengers loaded themselves with whisky in bottles. Returning to the dock, they escaped in a motor-boat.

The men were threading their way among the throng of passengers and stacks of luggage on the pier, when the Customa guard saw the nicks of two bottles protruding from the pockets on one of the party, each of whom was carrying a package in either hand.

The guard challenged, whereupon the men ran to the waiting motor. boat at the end of the pier and jumped iu.

As the passer gers scattered at the sound of the Customs men's revolvers, the smugglers saved their bands de risively and disappeared among the slipping in the river. A bail of bul lets followed them.

The authorities estimate that the men got away with a dozen bott'es each.
