MURDER MYSTERY.
BLACKMAIL CHARGE AGAINST SISTERS.
There was a quel to the Talke murder mystery of last December at the Potteries stipendiary court at Hanley.
On December 2 Mr Walter Hulse, The liceneeo of the Swan Hotel at Talle, was shot dead in bed by the side of his wife and a farm labourer named Edward Liz ney was charged with the crime and acquitted.
In mail werk two sieters named Clara Jones, 30, a dressmaker, and Alice May Jonce, 28 a fustian worker, were committed for trial at the Staffordshire Assizee on a charge of demanding money by minace ly sending letters to Min. Mary Jane Hulse, the widow of the murdered

Mrs. Hulse said she received an anonymous letter signed "A Friend in Need," which stated:
i am a person possessed of certain gilts of sexlog far into the future

the past.
Now, my dear lady, it is not my intention to arm you in the least, although I have seen a lot of the post of your household. Will you be so kind as to make me a present of £10 or £15? It will enable me to make a fresh start in life. You bali never las by your kind action or come to any herm.
Directions were gives in the latter as to hiding the money in a certain spot distinguished by a white mark. This letter was received of August 8. Mr. Hulso said she took no notice, and on August 11 she received a second letter in the same bandwrit ting. This s'ated:
"I have an invalid wife at home and I mean to get something for her, by good or evil ways, not really evil but trulblul If this is ignored I will proceed at once. If not, and L receive the money, my secret is bought for ever."
Mira. Hulso said she told the price, and by direction of Inspector G. WO- liams wrote a letter in reply. On August 15 she received a third letter in the same handwriting, which con- tained the following:
You ask why I should apply to you for money. Well, you know I hold your secret which really holde your lives: but, my dear lady, pleasó da not for one moment worry or excite yourself in the least as I will keep the secret for now and evermore if only you will let me have the money. I will do you no harm, for you must have had reason to do what you did. Mrs. Halse, said she handed this Jetter to Inspector Williame, and at his request wrate a second decoy letter.

After the second letter had been concealed he saw Ciara Jones, who was accompanied by her sister, take the letter. Ele arrested her and she banded over the letter. Clara Jones said: "My sister has a certain gift to seo into the future. She has been in conversation with.. Walter Hulse this 10orning. She knows who murdered him." Alice May Jouss said: "Now. Mr. Holse has given us away I shall give her away." She added that she had been in conversation with Mr. Hulse, and be bad told her there was no harm In getting few shillings in fhút way.
