REMARKABLE SALVAGE WORK IN SWEDEN.

A remarkable piece of salvage work which has been followed with the greatest interest throughout the country has been completed.

The passenger steamer "Per Brake,” in November, 1918 capsized in Lake Vasttern in a heavy gale and founder- *ed 400 metres off Port Haustholmen. The crew and passengers to the num- her of 21 were drowned, including John Bauer, one of the most promi. nent artists in Sweden, and his wife. and daughter, There were Do witnesses of the tragedy, but divers later found the steamer stuck in the bottom in the mud at a depth of 20 falbomu. The experts considered that it was impossible to salve the versel, and the owners of the ship would do nothing. Last summer a private salvage experiment was 00- dertaken, but it failed owing to the poor quality of the apparatus used.

People in the neighbourhood, how- ever, were unable to bear the idea of corpses lying unburied. They formed

a jo'nt stock company, and with the assistance of two skilled divern calvaga operations were begun in May

of this year. After great difficulty by means of two salvage vensals, heavy wires and capatana, the steamer was raised and towed into shallow water. The steamer was lifted to the surface, and pumped dry. The corpses of most of the passengers and women servants wese found in a patrid condition, shut up in the cabina among the dirairang- ed deck cargo, presenting a horrible spectaci. The men members of the crow were probably swept overboard by the gale.

The salvage work was often rander- ed perilous by frequent and sudden heavy gales, which ars characteristic of Lake Vaattern. Some weeks ago a gala nesily ospsized one of the salvage verrrls and made it necessary for the divere to begin their work over again

Experts consider the salvage work the most remarkable in Swedish annals in view of the primitive obaracter of the apparatus nied.
