UNABLE TO RESIST IMPULSE

TO COMMIT. FRAUD,

Some remarkable facts are brought | to light by inquiries mado with regard to the life story of Dorothy May Mar- ris, who was convicted at Warwick of false pretence,

She is described as posscasing ex- tradinary brains and intelligence, but her passion for stealing has total-' ly prevented her from using her capabilities to any honest purpose.

Born at Wolverhampton, of highly respectable parents, he is now twenty- six. Her father, now dead, was a man holding a reponsible and remunerative position. Her mother is living with a married son..

Haring received a good education, Haris was placed in a situation as a' clerk at Wolverhampton, with excel lent prospects, and there is no doubt that had she kept on the straight path she would have won a splendid posi tion. Unfortunately, the tendencies.. she showed for pilfering during her girlhood began to come out in a more violent form, and ber ingenuity enabled her to victimisa endless tradespeople in her native town.

A fascination for men then came over her, and she got into touch with an Army captain. He went out to France, and, having lost her situa- tion as the result of a conviction at Wolverhampton, she was next heard of at Rhyl, living as the wife of an Army captain there.

Again she carried on a campaign of ewindling tradespeople, with the result that she was fined five pounds.

Hertford was the next place to hold her attentions. There she committed Bnother long series of fraude, and was sentenced to twelve months' impri sonment. This period was spent in Winson Green Guol, Birmingham, where she underwent a special course of treatment. Soon after her release, however, she was again practising ber confidences, this time in a different direction. She sent letters of applica- tion for a situation all over the British. Isles, enclosing glowing_testimonials written by her own band.

AMAZING INGENUITY,

The ingenuity displayed in disguis ing the handwriting was amazing. Having received her appointments, she sent a request for a cheque to meet expenses, and in this way the obtained considerable same.

No sooner had she received her situation and a cheque, often for £10, she wrote after another one. Even tually she reverted to her old practice of posing a various people of high rank and obtaining goods of finest, quality such as dresses at 15 guineas and silk stockings at 45a. a pair.

She has a wonderful genius for

tale making good her to the magistrates, and has openly boasted after her conviction of the admirable manner in which abe bas impressed the bench.

FORGED TESTIMONIAS.

At her last appearance at Warwick Marris entered the dock, fashionably dressed and attractive looking, to! Bower & obarge of obtaining and endeavouring to obtain from local tradespeople goods to the value of nearly £100 by false pretences.

It appeared that Marris first of all obtained a rituation as governess at the house of Captain and Mrs. J. R. Bebert Percy, of Guya Cliffe, near Warwick, by means of a forged testimonial.

Sho took up her duties at Guys Cliffe on May 2, and soon afterwards she was posing in the district as a nirce of Lord Percy. She placed lavish orders with tradespeople and from one shop she ordered ekating and hunting boots, together with other footwear worth £18. She also secured a new costume worth £7 74 without payment, had another costume re modelled, and ordered other things, including a riding habit and ank lined cost, to the value of £63 109.

Before these were delivered, how- over the police we e on her track. She Belt Quy's Cliffe, but wae traced to Paddington, Waterloo and Southamp toa, and eventually she was arrested the Hampshire village Rowahams.

REMARKABLE RISE IN

EXPORTS.

JULT'S GOOD RETURNS,

A notable increase in the value of exporta from the United Kingdom is the feature of the returns relating to British trade for July.

£60,438,626,

Their value туда compared with £62,145,951 in Jone last, and with £15,172,399 in July of last year, the difference between the two Julys being £17,246,227. Last month's total was only exceeded in

January and March so far as this year

is concerned, but it should be noted that the amount for July of last year was one of the lowest of 1921.

A small increase was also shown in the value of last month's imports, the total being £81,783,094, against £20,501,803 in the corresponding month of last year, an increase of £1,281,671. Last month's total was, however, lower than that of both May. and Jure of this year.

The greater part of the rise in ex- ports was among articles wholly or mainly manufactured, which showed

an improvement of £11,7,50,305. Ia- creases were recorded of £7,870,821 in cotton Farms and manufactures, £1.504,023 in woollen and worsted October 17.-Lane Crawford, Ltd..
