MUSICAL MAGICIANS.

MORIZ ROSENTHAL' AND

MISCHA ELMAN,

This is an age of wonderful musical exccutants, and the names of two of the greatest stand at the head of this article. They belong to different gea erations, but each is recognized as a supreme master of his art.

Certainly this is so in the case of Rosenthal. Some quarter of a century ago, when he first came to London, Rosenthal amus:d his friends by stat ing-that-ke-would-prefer waiting another year before doing this, in order to perfect his technique, more thoroughly, although his technique at that time was already the wonder of the whole musical world. When he did come, his success, of course, was

TWO STORIES.

On another occasion the joke took the form of a little story which he narrated with great gusto at a dinner- party. His friend, he said, was giv ing a recital, and had reached the middle of the passage in question when an attendant approached the only auditor in the ball and asked to see his ticket. "I gave it to you when I caine in," said the man ad- dressed, a pattinich with snow-white! hair. "Impossible," replied the atten- ! dant, "for I remember distinctly that the caly person who passed me at the door was a little boy." "I was that boy," the patriarch made answer.

Even moreorashing was the rebuko which he administered not long ago to another distinguished rival-one of! the greatest of all living pianiste. The scene was a musical reception at a private house. The pianist in ques tion had been playing nearly all the evening, and afterwards, approach- Richter introduced him, having og Rosenthal, procee 'ed to hold forth presented him to the orchestia at the in very high flown strains on the joys beamal beforehand as the King of the matured and perfect artist! of Tianists." This, however, is only (meaning bimself, of course) who was one of many similar epithets which at last able to express himself without have been bestowed on him before thought of tesbaical bindrances. All of which is probably extremely distasteful to Rosenthal, who is a man of intellect and a great musician, not a mountebank or juggler; though his sense of bum doubtless comes to his rescue.
