Writing to the Evening: Standard on this subject, Sir Robert Arm- strong Jones, the eminent specialist, | says :-" The study of the emotions þas commanded considerable" atten- tion with us even before the wat, and both psychologists—who are atudents of the mind-and physiologista-ko are students of the bodily functions— have endeavoured: to describe them and to investigate heir underlying physical basis. One of the most interesting writer, among the former in Mc. Ä. E: Shand," while the physiological laboratory of Harvard University, in America, represented by Mr. W. B. Cannon, has dealt olear- ly with the latter aspect, and ho sa explained fally the physical mecha nism of the emotions as they direct and control conduct.

A FUNDAMENTAL INSTINCT. "Fear is one of the deepest and | most universal of the emotions, andis a fundamental instinct implanted in buman beings to ensure safety. It is an emotion with a definite erd, which is to escape from danger, and it there- fore has a special biological value to the individual. To experience fear is rot to be a coward, and certainly the man who is incapable of fear is not the man who has the highest form of courage, and on the other hand the man who is bravo is not he who *careless, reckless, fearless of what's past, present, and to come.' Too little fear leads to rashness, just as too much give ries to timidity. Fear is the result of some previous experience of danger, and this experience must be acquired by the individual, although it may be the result of suggestion.

We who, as d-ctors in the Army, were responsible for the treatment of so-called shell-shock, found that those who suffered did not get well when many of them were treated together, the condition being continued by are ing the others, and certainly the symptoms were at times indaged in athers by suggestion. We know that many of the wild animals when cap- tured young show no fear bechała they have not experienced danger. They behave Ike children with fire, They are not afraid because they have never experienced danger, and the persons also are not the type of the bravo or the courageous. The really brave man is be who bra mut danger and realises it and uses his reason to control his conduct.

IN SPITE OF FEAR.

"It is clear that Captain Scott ex- perienced fear in regard to the dangers of the great Antarctic expedition to which he and his brave par y succumbed, because he made all the neccesary preparations to danger. He not only realised the presence of the emotion of fear, but be so controlled his conduct to mees it. Captain Scott kuew from his
