August 15, President Harding through the British Embassy has sent a message of condole co to Lady Northcliffe and expressing his appreciation of Lord Northcliff's bigh qualities, exceptional ability; dominant personality, and sarvices to ma1 kind. The newspapers pay tribute to Northcliffe as one of the greatest figures of modern journalism, and especially praise his endeavours to promote Anglo-American friendship.

LONDON, Augant 15. The death of Lord Northcliffs hus ovoked the most uumerous expressions of grief at Home and abroad. Ex¡ ressions of sympathy flowed in to Lady Northcliffe throughout yesterday the senders including President Harding Mr. Hughes and M. Milletand. His life story is "featured" in all the morn- ing papers, which term Northcliffe the prince of journaliste, dwelling on the greatness of his genus and the tremendous power be wielded, and his re- markable achievements in transforming the newspaper world. They also tribute his great bumon qualities. His devotion to Britain and the empire is emphasised by numerous leader writers. Wide acknowledgment is made of the bans ficeat part in promoting the Irish settlement that Northchifo paid. Bis own orgaus pay the warmest tributes to him as man and em ployer. AMERICAN RAILWAY STRIKE.
DOUBTFUL POSITION.
WASHINGTON, August 15. In view of the failure of afforts to mediation of the railway strike it is understood that President Harding intends to invite the employers to operate the railways, pledging government backing in their efforts to serve the public. The Prevident proposes hortly to make a comprehen-ive statement to Congress regarding the situation. Cleveland reports that the conference between Lewis and the anthracite owners has been postponed to give Lewis time to negotiate a cottiement of the soft-coal strike, negotiations for which are progressing.
