EFFECTS IN GERMANY,

Benlin, Augüne 10, Germany has paid half a million sterling on aconat of the current instalosent of two millions pleat youso debts. During the past fortnight German ported 123,600 tons of coal from England. The brew of the London conference produced the atmolt and uneasiness on the bourse and in business circles. The weakness of the mark removes a reliable boets of calculation, rendering business difficult, perhaps im possible, and probably engendering a farther laurease of the cost of living. The bowspapere vigorously refute M. Poincare's assertion that Germany is stubbornly com- mitting bankruptay.”

FRENCII OPINIONS.

PARIS, August

The newspapere accuse Lloyd George of por sibility for wrecking the conference. They generally ascribe the breakdown to the publication of the Halfour Note which did not permit Mr. George to take steps towards n compremise.

AUSTRIA'S DEMANDS..

London, Augich ID,

It appears that the Austrian note consider by the conference requested a further loan of fifteenillions sterling, declaring that unless the money were forth- coming the government would be obliged to declare ita inability to carry on. Mr. Lloyd George pointed out that twelve and a hall millions had already bro ad vanced without any appreciable improvement Is only fair to tell the League of Nations that the Fosters all felt the extreme difficulty of making fartsub acriptions.

LONDON PRESS OPINIONS.

LONDON, August

The breakdown of the conference is pofitrally deeply deplored. M. Poincare reaffirmed that France was now free to take independent action against Germany if she were ontvoted on the reparations commission; but

"SOMEBODY'S INDECISION."

Loupon, August 15,

At a meeting of the Marconi Wireless Company Mr. Marconi said that last year was unprecedentedly dif Goult but this year improvement was already manifest, They alowed a profit of £275,000 and declared a dividend of ten per cent. on the ordinary shares. £600,000 were carried forward to the credit of profit and loss account. The company-would shortly participato in the opening of wireless services between South America and North America and South America and Europe. Similar services would shortly be opened from China and Japan. Referring to the delay in the making of the Wireless Chain, he said one consequence might be that British commerce would be handicapped by slower and deater communication, or its wireless messages mast pass through France and Germany or the United States until British high-power stations were ready. This was lamentable in view of the fact that Britain was the pioneer in long distance wirelcis. It was a very high price to pay for somebody's indecision.

OPIUM TRADE'S DOOM.

BRITAIN'S

ATONEMENT,

LONDON, August 16.

A special manifesto of the League of Nations announces that twenty of its members, including the principal European countries, with Germany, also China, India, Japan, Siam and British colonies, have accepted the system of import eertientes recommended by the opium advisory commission. The Daily News praisen the League's accomplishment, and saya a certain degros f illicit traffic in opium will no doubt survive as it survived in the slave trade in face of international agree ment but it is an enormous moral gain that the coun- tenance of these Governments is withdrawn therefrom and that condign punishment hereafter will follow its
