SOLICITORS AS COUNSEL.

Recent advices from Hongkong told us that, consequent, on a dearth of barristers owing to absence on leave, indisposition, and other causes, it was arranged that some, at least, of their work should be undertaken by solicitors. Interat will therefore be felt in the action which has just been taken by the Law Society in London. By a majority of two votes-20 to 48-the Society at its annual meeting decided that steps should be taken to secure that in cases where counsel, having accepted a brief, failed to appear at the heating, the solicitor instructing him should be allowed to conduct the case himself: Instances were cited where the interests of clients were greatly affected because counsel who had been briefed were on their feet in another Court. The resona for inability to attend in Hongkong are much more emphatic, because there the case is one of actual; shortage of counsel, and it makes the Amherst (On Fa!) for Kwong Chow appearance of sclicitors essential. | Wau.- August 14.
