"ROVERING TO SUCCESS."

BADEN TOWELL'S ADVICE

TO THE YOUNG MAN,

I

Sir Robert Eaden Powell's "Rover ing to Success" (llerbert Jerkins, 58.) is full of advice and information for the young man of nineteen or twenty. It is by no means, however, a dull text book, as it is written in the cheery style so dear to the Chief Scout.

"Happiness" is the great thing to aim for, writer B. P. ;-

My belief is that we were put inlo this world of wonders and beauty with a special ability to appreciate thera, in some cases to have the fun of taking a bond in developing them, nud also in being able to help other people instead of overreaching them, and, through it all, to enjoy life-that is to be happy.

He then explains what he himself, thinks is the meaning of to be happy-

Bappiness reetne to be partly pas- sive, but largely active. Passive, be. cause the appreciation of the beautics of nature, of the glory of the supert, of the majesty of the mountains, ofi the wonders of animal life under the scent of the campfire, coupled with the joy fa happy home, produce a sense of gratitude to the Creator that can only be satisfied by some netire expression of it; the effort to be help. Inl to others largely supplies the want. It is the active doing of good that counts.

A jayful home ecupled with ability to serve others gives the best bap- piness.

PLAY THE GAME,

The Chief Scout has no love for the crowds of young men who flock to ret paid layers in a game of football or to have a shilling on their fancy at

the races.

"Take part in games yoursell" is his slogan.

One of the after-effects of the war is that more people are saving money. Sir Robert also couples with this one other good effect of the war:-

Certainly there are more people who eave money now-and fewer who spit. I don't know that the two points have any connection, but they just happen to be Inets.

Though no tretotaller, BP. do s not believe is drinking alcohol, if it ia possible to avoid it.

It is the drinking between your eats that does the harm. If fellows only drank liquor at meal time, I believe that there would be no such thing as drunkenness and certainly they would be twice as healthy.

It is good to know that the post. war young men and worgen kave a champion who believes in them -

I believe in the rising generation of young citizens. The war has dono something in opening the eyes of you lude to the more sirinus ride of life.

You have ambition. You want to be manly fellows, you want to be lit to play your part successfully. whether in games or is the work of life, or in the service of the com munity, and you see that if you to do it with MEAD

aby success you have no use for drink with ita waste of time and money and -health,

For the benefit of those who do not understand what a "Rover" is, the Chlef Scout explains that be is a boy 100 old to be a Scout who nevertheless obers:1way lama Wears Beaut nullum with datinc'ivo badges, wud le just an "aid-boy Beat," -
