The Best Women.

A "best man” who was a WOMAN acted at a wedding at Ealing recently. This unusual role was adopted on the spur of the moment, the Daily Chronicle learns. It was all arranged on the way to the church. The pro- apective bridegroom--an afficer attached to the Air Force who lost his leg in the war-sad the bride, a war, widow, motored from London. With them were an ex-officer who was to be best inan, and a woman who was to give the bride away. Sadden- ly the woman exclaimed: "Let's be original. Let me be the best man. Promptly the suggestion was adopted. The ex-officer handed over the wed- ding ring to her, and at the ceremony she produced it and "supported" the bridegroom while the original deat man gave the bride away.

Handling Bee Snakes.

97

There is a young woman of the Natural History Museam who is in effect a spake charm:t on scientif lines As curator of the reptile department, her duties include the anpacking and handling of live poisonous snakes from all parts of the world. One Saturday's Press repre sentative made inquiries in that department regarding the rumoured arrival of a consignment of live anakes, and discovered the curator anpacking specimens which bad, unfortunately, died en mate. "When I handle poisonous makes alive," she said, "I wear rabbit skin gloves at fire, but once I know my snakes I wear no gloves, and let them wind themselves round my arms. I find they respond, like most wild things, to the right method of handling." Asked what constituted, the right method of i handling, she replied, "Oh, it's just a knack, that's all." As curator of reptiles she has charge of all the exhibits in the galleries and of the store-room collections, being occupied cataloguing new specimens, slive, dried, or preserved in spirit. Perhaps her most interesting live specimen at the moment is a Mexican avolotl, the white, tadpole-like creature that Pro- fessor Julian Hurley has turned into a sort of salamander by feeding it with thyroid gland. This particular axolotl, however, has been experimenting on its own account. In a moment of wild adventure it swallowed three pebbles, clearly discernible beneath its transparent skin. "He can't swim up to the surface of his tack now," she said, "they weigh him down; but he srems quite happy and healthy, so I don't worry."
