GREAT HIGHWAY.

HONGKONG AND CANTON.

HUGE UNDERTAKING BEGUN..

The vision of a great highway between Hongkong and Canton is materializing.. Already the work has begun and within the next few years th's new link between the two most important commercial centres in South Chins will be completed, its 172 miles ready for through traffic, and the further enterprise that will lead to a tramway or motor bus service over the

This great project was fir-t made known to the public in a special article written for the Chine Mails 76th Anniversary Souvenir number by Mr. H. E. Goldsmith who has charge of the Colony's roads. He expressed the opinion that the construction of a great trunk highwar between Hongkong and Canton would be of vast commercial beceft to the two cities and incidentally tthe whole of China. His address to the Municipal Council of Canton, in December last, whereia he outlined the scheme for this huge undertaking. has been translated and circulated among the Chinese, who have evidently erinced so great an interest in the scheme as to be ready to make it an estab" lished fact with as little delay, as possible.

Below we give a few extracts of the scheme as laid before the Council in

the above mentioned address —

The opening up of outlying districts would reliere residential congestion (and this from the point of view of health is worth consideration), and provide fresh areas for building pur poses. The building of such a road as I propose would give employment to numbers of people, who perhaps, at present, have scanty means of livelihood.
