Grxevi, Apl 24. • Interviewed with regard to the statement made by Mr. Chao Hein Chu, Chinese representative on the opium Commission of the League of Nations, that while reports of the Chinese Government commissioners from twelve: provinces or parts of provinces confirmed the news that the poppy was again being cultivated to some extent strict orders had been given for the destruction of the crops whes found, Sir John Jordan declared that the" reports were futile and omitted the most important provinces. He had evidence that in February laat opium in some quarters was being cultivated over a greater area than for many years. He estimated the present prolaction at 25 or 30 per cent of the produs tion in 1907 and described the policy of the India Government in continuing to send opium to Hongkong and elsewhere as vary ansatisfactory. The Chinese argued that if India and other mantries were supplying Chin-re abroad with opium why should they nos grow it for Chinese at home. British communities in the Fast held the opinion that the prestige of Britain was being very seriously injured by this action
