The sound of a syren booting con- timneusly for upwards of a quarter of an hour brought many Kowloon folk from their hedi not long síter midnight last night to see a ship afire at the Kowloon whart. It was the British Indis statmer "Jspan” which arrived yesterday morning from Calcatta, via Singapore. Two of her holds, containing several thousand tons of cotton and jate, caught slight and the blaze was not extinguished until about 7 o'clock this morning.
It was at 15.23 8.a. that first alern was given by sme watchmen. Winthree minutes waterwas playing on the No. 1 and No. 2 holds from the ship' boses and other hoses were the run across from the Japanese Etrazer "Calcutta Maru" on the opposite side of the wharf.

According to the Canton Times, seamen meeting in the Kwangs Association's Building passed a re solution requesting President Sun Yat-sen to pardon their former leader Chan Ping-sang who was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment on a charge of murdering his wife. The seamen declared that they did not wish to infringe respect for the law but the President bas power to grant a special pardon at the request of the citizens. In addition to the seamen cther guilds in Cauton and Horg kong are expected to join in the request and a joint petition will be submitted to the President.
