LORD NORTHCLIFFE'S ADVICE.

Loxnox, January 3. Interviewed at Colombo, Lord Northcliffe em phasised that Germany was expending an immeusa arant of money on propaganda in the Far East by Berlin wireless, subsidized newspapers, and films. The wireless service consisted largely of misleading state- ments and actual lies with reference to Egypt, India, the Washington Conference, Ireland, Japan, China, responsibility for the great war, and the gloomy condi tion of British trade. He believed the camo minda were promoting the present mischief as actuated the notorious wireless dispatches during the war. He said that he regarded this propaganda as being ae dangerous to day as during the war. In view of the uncertainties existing in the Far East he considered that a great effort should be made to support British owned newspapers in the Far East by British advertisers,

COMING GEOLOGICAL EXPEDITION,

LONDON, January 3.

Professor John Walter Gregory, Professor of Geology at (Hasgow University, accompanied by his son, who will

•be his sole European companion, will start on a scientific expedition to China in March. He will examine the mountain ranges in Yunnan and Western Szechuan in order to determine their relation to the Himalayas and the mountain system of South Eastern Asia. The two men will only carry sporting rifles, dpending on a Chinese escort for protection. The professor latende presenting the geological collections of the expedition to the Glasgow University, the zoological and botanical collections to the London Natural History Museum, and some spcimens to the Indian Museum at Calcutta.

{Professor Gregory has travelled in the Rocky Mountains and the Great Basin of the Western States for geological purposes. He has been an explorer in British East Africa, and was naturalist with Sir Martin Conway's Expedition across Spitzbergen. In 1900 he was director of the civilian scientific staff of the Antarctic Expedition, from 1901 to 1902 head of the Lake Eyre (Austalin) Expedition, and from 1902 to 1904, Director of the Geological Survey, Mines Depart ment, Victoria. He is the author of several books and a number of scientific papers.]

FINANCIAL CRISIS AVERTED.

CHICAGO, January 3.

The Continental, Commercial and National Bank and the Continental, Commercial and Trust Savings Bank have takea over the Fort Dearborn National Bank and Fort Dearborn Trust Savings Bank and have guaranteed all deposits therein which on September 6, totalled $60,000,000. The Chicago Clearing House Commission examined the affairs of the Fort Dearborn Banks and found the asseta impaired by had loans and investments. Banking circles express the opinion that the merger has averted the very serious financial crisia which has been threatened in Chicago for a decade. As a result of the merger the Continental and the Com mere al National Bank interests have now been com- bined. The assets amount to nearly $525,000,000 the second largest in the United States.

ROTTERDAM, January 3.

A young Amsterdam lawyer, Dr. Wysman was mysteriously murdered on New Year's Eve in a train between Amsterdamn and the Hague whither he was going to spend new year with his parents. The Times science correspondent states that highly promising experiments have been made with rubber expanded by gas into a highly cellular form as an insulator in cold storage. The Times points out that if anticipations in this direction are realised a welcome stimulus may be given to the movement to increase the consumption of rubber.

LONDON, January 3. The Bankers' Clearing House in its annual statement sports that the total paid through the Clearing House during the year was £31,930,000,000, a decrease of £4,088,000,000 compared with 1920 which was a record year, but it exceeds the total of any year prior to 1920.
