CORRESPONDENCE.

IN THE SOCIAL SWIM.

[To the Editor of the " China Mall."

Sir,I write to ask if you cannot curb the dirtiness of the writer of the above notes. No one enjoys more than I do a clever story with a clove floating in it, but it is degrading to be forced to wallow in the hog-wash. TheHoggenheimer" and "Private Orchard "storics could not be accused of cleverness by the wildest enthus- jast and surely adultery, though it may sometimes be tha piquante of amusing situations on and off the stage, is not in itself a funny thing, and can only raise the gorge when spread on so thickly that the Tread of the story becomes invisible.

WORLD PROBLEMS.

In the course of an interview be- tween Lord Northcliffe and Japanese and Chinese press representatives at the Peking Hotel, the following ques- tions and answers were excbanged:

Question. Is there no alternation in your opinion towards the Anglo- Japanese Alliance?

Answer. No; this is the issue that affects the world.

Question. Do you suppose that the Peking Government is under the control of Japan ?.

Answer,-Yes.

Question. Do you expect that the Washington Conference will actually bear fruit?

If there is a demand for pure snobbery let us be regaled with the doings of our betters (but, ye Gods, Answer. Yes, certainly I do; in why in the China Mail of all papers?); view of the fact that the Powers are let us buvo the gargantuan menus of labouring under the heavy burden of taipan's dinners; the favourite cock-armaments, they will no doubt agre tails of Legislative Councillors; even to the proposed restriction of arma the fabric of their wives' evening meats. frocks.
