[DARDANELLES blunder.
FRESH LIGHT ON WAR MYSTERIES..
Many mysterious passages of the wat are cleared up in Sir Julian Corbett'a "Naval Operations," of which the second volnae is published (Longmans, 21s net.) It forms part of the "Official History of the War," and covers the period from the Battle of the Falklands to the entry of Italy in May 1915. The principal subject is the disastrous Dardanellos Expedition and its antecedents..
What happened at the Dogger Bank is now officially disclosed, though the secret had already been revented by Mr. Filson Young. Three undamaged and almost natouched British battle cruisers left the pursuit of three badly damaged German ships in order to sink the battered Blucher, which was already in extremia. They did not read Beatty's signals correct-
ly which ordered than to "keep closer to the enemy," and failed to "sink the lot,"

the German battle-cruiser "Dertlinger," which ship was left free, herself unattacked, to coa- centrate on putting the British. flag- ship out of action. The story of
mines and Gerinan
submarines necessitating the British withdrawal | was therefore a mere fiction.
It was always a mystery in the earlier part of the war why the British did not clear the Germans out of Ostend. i The reason is now revealed. Sir John French prepared a plan for the opera- rien, and it was approved by Joffr. But it required an amalgamation of the British and Belgian Armies: "When it was submitted to the King of the Belgians he was unable to agree, If the field-marshal decided to make the attempt on Ostend he was ready to co-operate to his full strength, but he could not consent to the proposed unity of cominand." So early as December 1914 the unity of command was becoming a burning question.
