CHESTER THE CHEF.
FAILURE TO REVOLUTIONISE BREAKFAST TABLE.
Chester, the ruddy-bearded chef whom Sir William Orpen made famous in this year's Acadomy, is going back to his beloved Paris in despair.
You English," he says, "have no soul above eggs and bacon, My efforts at lunch and dinner you up- preciate, yes.
But my finest artistic triumphs at breakfast, no. They are wasted, I give you up, and go back to my Paris.
Chester has not given up trying to convert the stolid Brison to the French idea of a breakfast-coffee, rolls, and a dainty omlette with mushroom or hapu---without a struggle. For four months he has been at the Raynı Palace Hotel, Kensington, wooing the Briton, and whale tis Chester sauce, and other dishes have been much appreciated, the Eng- lishman is still cold to his art in the early morning.
The plain truth is that the inhabit- ants of an island swept by the cold mists of the Atlantic and the rain- laden clouds from Ireland want a good inside lining before they start their day's work. The bigger thợ lining the more the breakfast ap- probes the ideal After all, the nation which not so very long ago in its rough island story considered beer a suitable breakfast beverage is not going to accept easily the light telje petit déjeuner. So Chester, who is big enough to acknowledge defeat, is returning to the Hotel Chuíbam.

HUNTER HUNTED.
WONDERTUL ESCAPE IN.
AFRICAN JUNGLE.
A thrilling encounter with an in- furiated ball elephant, which nearly cost hin: his life, was one of the ad- ventures which befell Mr. J. Morewood Dowsett, of Porchester-square, W., while big game hunting.
Mr. Dowsett has just returned from a visit to Africa, during which be spent six months travelling may thousands of miles between Italian Somaliland, Abyssinia, the Soudun, and the Cape. He told to a Daily Chronicle representative, recently the story of his escape from death..
It happened in a Uganda-forest, where Mr. Dowsett, with a companion and two natives, had tracked down a herd of elephants; They tramped a mile through grass 12 feet high, and a further three miles into the bush,
Hidden behind a bush, Mr. Dowsett was preparing to take photographs of the herd, when the beasts cented the party, and made straight for them.
+
SURPRISE ENCOUNTER.
Mr. Dowsett shot the leader dead, and fled for cover, but, mistaking the directions of the native chief, he took the wrong direction, and ran into a big bull elephant belonging to a berd that bad come up behind the bunting party,
With a sweep of his trunk, the elephant knocked him down and turned round to trample him to death. With great agility Mr. Dowsett escaped by taking a flying leap under the animal, but he was not yet out of danger.
Again the elephant turned, and rushed straight at him, and this time Mr. Dowsett was knocked off his legs. Lying that on the ground, he could see the elephant's long tueks just over his head. and his trupk sweeping the ground, endeav- ouring to pick him up.
Just in time, he was able to wriggle behind the animal, and then he jump ed up to rush for cover.
ELEPHANT SCARED.
Instead of pursuing him the eleph- ant turned round and dashed wildly off in the other direction, as if he had had a terrife shock.
