SATURDAY. NOVEMBER 12, 1921-
CORRESPONDENCE.
THE LEGION,
[To the Editor of the" China Mait.")
Dear Sir,As one of the men who 'saw active service on various fighting fronts, I should very much liko to make a suggestion with regard to the controversy which is at present being"" carried on concerning the newly formed Briti-h Legion.
It seems to me that rein has been given to a good deal of useless 1e- crimination, which certainly does not help to settle the question of eligibi- lity to membership, which question is somewhat difficult to answer.
Obviously, in some case there must be men entitled to admission, who although they saw service in a theatre of war, dil not see service on A fighting front; it may have been their lortune, or misfortune, but the Jact remains that there are many veterans of the Great War, who would be only too faxious to join an association where, the fundamental condition of membership would be proof that they had actually served in the trenches.
Shakespeare said Whats in a name "ute, but I think that were he alive today, and heard of such a Trunch Contrades "be
JULMC as
would agree that a vast significance exists in some names.
I venture to say that the majority of men who remember the trenches, would be only too pleased to club together, if only for the sake of re- rainiscences they would recall to ench utler perhaps over a glass of Fin Bing," but obviously such a dis- cussion would be most discourteous at a gathering of the present Legion. because it i always unfair to broach topic of which only the minority anung those present have any know- ledge.
