He could not understand how it

was that his mother was so anxious to have him near her the next few days and that she would not let him go any distance into the woods.

I have always gone blackberrying before Mother." he said one afternoon, "Why won't you let me go this year?".

"I want you to stay and take care of me Jacky", she replied and be had to be content with this answer.

However it was not long before he found out the reason why he was not allowed to go far away.

One evening, it was just getting dark and Jacky had been bringing in plenty of logs for the fire as it was very chilly.

Mrs. Hawkins had gone indoors a moment before and had left Jacky to follow on with the last load of logs.

He put them down by the door and was about to go in, when he thought he heard a noise behind the cow-shed, which was near to the log house, at

one end.

He listened There was the sound of a dry twig snapping and then a faint whisper.

There must be thieves about, thought Jacky, though somehow the idea of Indians never entered his head. Quick as thought he dashed into the house. His mother was not in the 1 ving room so Jacky, without waiting to call her, seized the gun which always hung above the mantelpiece. His father had taught him to use it and he was quite a good shot for, a boy of his age.

He ran out and in the dark was just able to see two dark formas) slip ing round the side of the cow-shed.

"Indians"! he muttered to himself and he saw their feathered head. dresses and at once he aimed the gun at them and loosed off the trigger.

There was a wild yell and the Indians disappeared as rapidly as they had come.

At the sound of the shot Mrs. Hawkins came rushing out calling "Jacky, Jacky, where are you?"

"It is all right Mother," a

answered the boy re assuringly and then he told her how he had acon, the Indiara creeping up to the cow-shed, and that he had scared them away.

"I do hope they have really gone," said Mrs. Hawkins, who was trembling with fright.

..

"I wish your father would come back from town."

Here he is Mother," said Jacky, as Mr. Hawkins came riding up.

Oh come inside," cried Mrs. Hawkins "I don't feel safe out here." Bo they wont in and bolted and barred the door and then told Mr. Hawkins what had happened. A

You are a brave boy Jacky," said Mr. Hawkins and I am glad to find that you keep your wits about you.

"Cheer up dear," he added, turning to his wife, The Indlade are easily. scared and I do not suppose for a minute that they will return.

PETER PAN.

THE PEACE-PIPE OR CALUMET.

When the North American Indians make peace, those who arrange tho terms smoke a peace-pipe together.

The Peace-pipe is about two and a balf feet long. The bowl is made of red marble and the stem of a reed decorated with eagles' feathers and women's hair.

It is said that the Great Spirit (which is the Indians' idea, of God) once called the Indian nations to- gether. He stood on a precipice of red pipe-stone rock, and broke off a piece. Then he made it into the bowl of a pipa, filled the pipe with the bark of red willow and smoked over them, turning to the four winds.

He told them that the red colour of the pipe represented their flesh and that when they smoked it they must bury their war-clubs and scalping knives. When the pipe was finished the Great Spirit disappeared. Long- fellow tells us about this in his poem. "Hiawatha."

"Wash the war-paint from your

faces,

Wash the war-stains from your

fingers,

Fury your war-clubs and your

Weapons; Smoke the calumet together, And as brothers live henceforward.”

KING OF "MESPOT.”

300,000 FLOCK TO THE CITY

OF THE CALIPHS.

By air mail from Bagdad El Mokattam has received a merange stating that the referendum in Mes- opotamia resulted in the unanimous election of Feisul as King of Irak (Mesopotamia). His accession to the throne took place on a Sunday. The celebration continued for Lhrea

days, during which Bagdad was betlagged and decorated, recalling the days of the Caliphs and the Arabian Nights. It is estimated that about 300,000 people have arrived at Bag- dad from all parts of Mesopotamia to attend the celebrations.

It is impossible to describe the

· enormous enthusiasm oven of tribes which were hostile to the Provisional Mesopotamian Government. The Kurdish tribes of South Anatolia have. declared loyalty to the new King, whose reign promises to solve one of the most difficult problems of the Middle East.

King Feisul, the first Arab King of the now Arab State of Irak, set up by the British Government, is the third serving son of Hussein, King of the Hedjaz, and was born at Mecca 34 years ago. After holding a post in Constantinople under the Turkish Government for some years he return- ed to Arabia and commanded the Arabe against Ibn Saud, a rival chief- tain and head of a new religious sect who threatened his father's kingdom. During the war he formed the Arab Regular Army which took part in Lord Allenby's operations in Pales- tine against the Turks. After the war he became King of Syria, but was deposed last year by the French. The Propbet Mahommed is his 37th

The scenes at his coronation were most brilliant. Dozens of succulent dishes were available to all, and for a time the poor and the rich feasted side by side.
