WASHINGTON CONFERENCE.
PREMIER'S DECISION DISAPPOINTS AMERICA.
JAPAN'S ATTITUDE PEAISED.
LONDON, September 29. Keen disappointment is felt in America at Mr. Lloyd George's inability to attend the Washington conference which is considered even aarz import- ant 10 the interests of the world than Britain's domestic pro blems.
There are indications that official cfcrts will be made from Washington with the object of persuading the Premier to alter his decision. It is estimated, that the conference will last three months. The Daily Telegraph, referring to Japan's intensive effort to arrive at a preliminary agreement with Antira and China en points in dispate, says that none tulises better than the Japanese premier that it is in Japan's interest to attend the Washington conference without encountering old prejudices and distrust of which the persistence night hamper even the ruin of the general Pacific arrangements now contemplated. Japanese diplomacy by happy treatment of the Yap Question and its frank overture to Chica la: gape far towards dispelling some of the clouds that only a few weeks ago still overhung the China seas.
BONAR LAW NOT LIKELY TO ATTEND.
Reuter learns that it is doubtial whether 3fr. Bonar Law will be able to attend the Washington conference. Sir L Worthington Evans will attend if land disarmument is discussed. but such a discussion is doubtful in view of the great opposition in certain quarters. It is always understood here that the Pacific question will be the first realt with, but although nothing definite is known it looks as if the United States Government nox intended that dis- armament should be discussed first.
FRENCH LABOUR DISSENS ON.
SPLIT IN CONFEDERATION POSSIBLE.
PARIS, September 21. The burning question now dividing French Labour-- namely the dissension Letween the moderates and extremists who favour adhesion to the Moscow Jcternational-was dealt with at a meeting of the National Committee of the General Confederation of Jalour, which passed a resolution by 63 votes to 5 in favour of compelling the extremists to respect trade union discipline as defined at the recent Lille congress when a resolution was passed implying imination from the Confederation of the so-called revolutionary and yadivalist committees. Possibly this will lead to a split in the Confedera- tion and the expulsion of the Communists.
PERSHING IN FRANCE
GUEST OF THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT.
HAVKE, September 21. General Pershing arrived and proceeded to Paris as the guest of the French Government. Besides attending the selection of the body of America's unknown soldier he will inspect the American troops in occupation at
Coblentz.
ULTIMATUM TO HUNGARY BEADY.
ALLIES THREATEN VERY SEVERE MEASURES."
LONDON, September 21.
The Ambassadors Conference has not yet despatched an ultimatum to Hungary with regard to Burgenland, but it is understood that the terms have been practically settled and Hungary will be given ten or fourteen days to evacuate Burgenland failing which the Allies will take very severe measures, the nature of which is not yet known.
