JUDGE'S SEVERE STRICTURES,

elderly

Sobbing violently, #N Chinese woman was presented in the dick at the Criminal Court this afternoon on a charge of having off- ered Sergeat Elston, in charge of the Hawkers, Licensing Department at the Central Police Station, a bribe of $30,

Asked for her plea the prisoner, between sobs, said she bad offered the bribe on the advice of Au Cheuk Sang, a solicitor's clerk.

The Acting Chief Justice (Mr. H. H. J. Gompertz) took this as a ples of guilty and remarked that it was apparent from the depositions that the woman would not have offer- ed the bribe except on the advice of! the clerk. He found however that under the Ordinance he must order imprisonment in addition to a fine.

In reply to His Honour's question Mr. Wakeman, the Crown Solicitor. said that the clerk had been summon- ed as # witness but could not be found.

"I am very sorry to hear that remarked His Honour" because,

**

I should have told him that nothing would have givea greater pleasure than sending him to jail for six months. It seems to the that this woman was after all merely La ton! She is an ignorant "woman and unfortunately the man at the bottom of it is Au whom I would have great pleasure in sending to jail I could get him. His Honour decided to award the woman seven days' jail and fined her $10. He would, he said, formal order that Au Chenk Sang's recognis-

and in the event of insufficient money being forthcoming to meet the re- cognisance would make an order for his imprisonment.

MACAO SENSATION.

CLASH WITH CHINESE SOLDIERY.

Enquiry at the Portuguese Cor sulate this morning failed to elicit any information regarding the re- ported friction between the Macao) Water Police and Chinese soldiery on Friday. Beyond what bas appeared in the Macac papers,

is nothing

known officially here about the afair. According to report:, the engage- ment" occured at the approach to the inner harbour of Maczo. Several Chinese soldieryin uniform and armed with Mauser pistols, it is stated, came in a sarapat from the Chinese territory known to the Portuguese as Ribeira Grade". They were challenged by a Portuguese patrolling launch, but did not stop. As the Portuguese were outunmbered by the Chinese, they signalled for assistance from a patrol motor boat. The Chinese made for land followed by the Portuguese. On the slopes of the hill they were reinforced by a larger party of Chinese and opened fire on their pursuers from behind boulders. A sharp exchange of bullets followed in which the Chinese engineer of the Portuguese motor boat was killed. A gunner of the Patris," who Was in the boat," and several of its crew were wounded. It is not known what casualty, were suffered by the other side. A tailor belonging to the Chinese Customs launch Pak- tan" was killed by a stray ballet

while landing.

The escapade is described as daring in view of the fact that both the gunboats Patris" and "Macao" were in the harbour at the time.
