OPERATION AT-SEA,

LINER RACE TO SAVE MAN'S LIFE.

ARMLESS SPAMAN'S PLUCK.

How sa Atlantic lines raced to meet another vessel so that the farmer's surgeon could save a man's life was described on the arrival of the Cunard lizer "Albania" at Liverpool.

When more than 300 miles from the Irish coast, the "Albania" received a wireless message from the steamer Tamaqua." bound for London from Montreal, stating that one of the ship's firemen had had bis arm torn of and asking for advice. The "Tamaqua" was about 100 miles away but was unable to carry out the surgeon's instructions. The "Albania" then sterred to meet the "Tamaqua" and reached her in 5 hours

A boat was lowered from the "Albania"with the ship'ssurgeon, who found an immediate operation was necessary, and he signalled instruc tions to the "Albania." The wounded man had shown the greatest endbe ance after the accident. He had climbed unaided up the engine-room ladders and was walking about the deck before his condition was noticed. He was transferred to the "Albania's" boat, and, although weak from the less of blood, asked the doctor for a cigarette, and as the boat was approaching the Cunarder he waved his left hand to the passengers.

Two American doctors, passengers in the "Albania," had made prepar ations to assist the "Albania's" sur- geon on the arrival of the injured man, and three women passengers- qualified nurses-also helped, and for two days and nights watched by the man's bedside. On the arrival of the "Albania" at Liverpool, the fire Tottori faruman. William Ward, of Eull, was Gients

removed to hospital.
