MARQUESS OF MILFORD HAVEN DEAD

FORMER FIRST SEA LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY.

LONDON, September 11. The death is announced of the Marquess of Milford Haven.

Admiral Louis Mountbatten was created 'first Marquess of Milford Haveri in 1917. Born in Austria in 1854 he became a naturalised British subject as Prince Louis of Bartenberg and he entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1868. After serving in the Egyptian War 1882 he was Com mander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet during 1908-10, commanded two divisions of the Home fleet in 1911, and was second Sea Lord of the Admiralty during 1911-12. He resigned from the Navy in 1914 after be had held the position of First Sea Lord of the Admiralty for two years. jin 1917, at the King's request, he relinquished his German titles, assum

The grape harvest now in progress is bidding fair to rival wheat as regards quality and quantity. Consequently the agricultural year on the whole is quite satisfactory. Under the circumstances prices of the chief commodities should soon show a substantial decline. The Cabinet is con- templating further measures to reduce the cost of living and curb specula- tion. Under the Government's auspices a wheat show is being held in Paris in order to advertise the most modern methods of wheat cultivation. SAN FRANCISCO, September 12,

A serisation has been created by the arrest of the fim actor "Fatty" Arbuckle charged with murder in connection with the death of Virginia Rappe, a film actress who died after a party in Arquckle's apartment. The district attorney states that. Arbuckle is charged
