Thomas Samuel Berry, a dock pilot, of Hull, said that on May 25 he saw the ketch sailing up the Humber. He went aboard with Albert William Gilles, and found Jaeckel there alone. Asked if he wanted any help he replied, Yes: I don't know where to go or what to do." He said he had sailed the vessel alone from Germany. After the vessel had been docked, Jaeckel said that he had two other men on board when he left Hamburg, and that he bought the ship from the master while at sea. "I was going to put back to Hamburg," he went on, when a motor fishing vessel came along and these two men left by that vessel. I then put to sea myself and found that my compass had gone wrong, I lost my bearings for two ar three days until I fell in with same English fishing vessels. He said he had bought the ship with a view to seeing with how anall a crew sailing ships could be handled.
Berry said Jaeckel asked him to try to dispose of the ketch, ofering a commission of 15 per cent, as he in tended to go to America to try his lock there. Next morning after some bargaining Jaeckel agreed to sell it to him for $200.
Jaeckel told the magistrate that it was £500 and not £200 that he asked for the ketch.
