A FOOLISH FOKI
"PLANTING THE. SILVER TREE.”
1
Attributing his misfortune to the evil influence of a fortune teller, whose methods of obtaining money he des- ibed as Planting the Silver Tree," a foki of a shop in Queen's Road Central who was charged before Magistrate Lindsell with having rided his master's safe and told stolen $2,150 in notes, a very curious story. He alleged that he was duped by a fortune teller who had a stall outside the Manmo Temple in Hollywood Road. He made the man's acquaintance early this year, and had often can- sulted him. Daring one of these cansultations, the fortune teller after examining the witness's palm, an nounced that a bit of good fuck was soon coming his way. By way of proving his statement, the quack invited the witness to several. de- monstrations, in one of which a bowl full of rice was used. After barning! some charms, the fortune teller invited the witness to put his hand in the bowl He did so, and behold, be pulled out two brand new silver dollars from among the rice! Having now sufficient influence over his victim, the old fraud outlined the conditions under which the fortune could be secured. For this, he said, $2,000 in notes. was essential to put around the rice bowl. The victim's fortune was estimated at $108,000, out of which the fortune teller was to get 23 per cent, as commission. The question new was how to raise the $2,000. The fortune teller, the ac- cused alleged, soon settled this. He prevailed upon his victim to take his master's money, assuring him that it was only a matter of a week cr so before his fortune would come: to him, and then he could return, his master's money, without even the latter knowing that it had been borrowed. The fortune teller was alleged also to have told the accused that his master's books showed a balance in hand of over $2,000, which was kept in the safe, and gave him directions where to find the safe key! An important condition which the fortune teller impressed. on his victim was that he must not touch any silver coin, He was to take all the bank notes he could find in the safe. The accused carried out the instructions to the letter, found the key where he was told it was kept, opened the safe and removed" bank noter to the value of $2,150, all that he could find. He met the fortune teller by appointment at a boarding house and handed the money over to him. After making an appointment with the accused at his stall outside the temple that night, the fortune teller departed. The accused kept the appointment at the temple, but the fortune teller did not, and both! he and his stall had not been seen since. Enquiries elicited the in- formation that the "good old man" had suddenly run into a bit of good. fortune and had returned to the country to live the remaining days of his life in comfort!
The Magistrate was struck by the straightforward way in which the accused told his story, and thought that there was some trath in it. He asked the complainant if he were prepared to take the accused back in his employ. The latter replied that he did not want to see him again.
The Magistrate remanded. the case until later in the day in order that) the accused's mother who was also employed by the complainant might be brought up with a view to seeing what could be done to refund the complainant's money.
