Lake Lugano is a tricky picnicking spot for those who do not know it
peculiarities The geographical frontiers of Italy and Switzerland cross and recross it in a perplexing manner. During the war unwary Germans who made Lugano their headquarters several times
difficulties got into
taking by
few -har trips and landing a dred yards the wrong side. The latest to fall into the trap is on Simons, the German Foreign Secre tary. The other day he took a boar palled by German bostman from the villa not far from Porte Tresa (the
frontier) where he was staying and went for a row. A storm get up as it does quickly on this mountain- encircled lake and You Simons had to pat into share. They landed at Brusimpiano which is Italian and were immediately asked for their passports. Not being able to produce them and having, as the frontier officials thought, inadequate explanations to offer, they were marched off on foot at 10 pas to the Italian frontier-police head- quarters which they reached at midnight. Here Van Simons man- aged to prove his identity and the party were released. They ultimately reached home more dead than alive in the early hours of the morning.
