COAL DIPUTE.
A SMALL" ADVANCE TOWARDS PEACE:
LABOUR COAL EMBARGO RAISED.
LONDON May 31..
The Magistrate: Are you admit- |ting the assault, Mr. Hind?
Mr. Hind: No. My case is that the other side started the trouble.
The Magistrate: Then you admit disorderly conduct?
Mr. Hind: Nothing of the sort. The other people started the affair and go: the worse of the argument.
Mr. Longinotto (for the complais-
| aste): With haréners.
The Magistrate: Your men were fighting. Mr. Hind?
Mr. Hind: I don't deny fighting, but we were not responsible for the start of the trouble.
In opening the case for the com. plainants, Mr. Longinotto said that} his clients were fikts of a sand lighter. On the morning of May 6, they were Sghter when the defendants came up and without any warning or prov- ocation assaulted them with stope- breaking hammers. Both complain ants were severely injured on the head. The cause of the attack was believed by the complainants to be an objection on the part of the first de fendant, to Ko Fat, (one of the com- plainants) employing his wife.
The Notts and Forestdean miners have rej ted the Government's earrying stones from the shore to the posals for a coal settlement, but it is noteworthy that votes were taken on the assumption of the miners that the Premier intended to enforce arbitra- tion. Mr. Lloyd George's denial of this intention yesterday altered the situz tion. Mr. Hodges, interviewed, declared that the wages question should be settled by the owners and workers mutually without invoking the aid of an outsider. The gap dividing the parties could be considerably narrowed if the owners were now prepared to subent proposals for a higher standard of wage than already proposed. Mr. Hodges' statement is regarded as a small advance towards peace.
EMERGENCY POWERS EXTENDED.
LONDON, May 31........
Ko Fat corroborated Mr. Long- inotto's statement as to the assault, and said that he was attacked from behind by the first defendant and four or five other zien. The first

LONDON, June 1. The railwaymen's and transport workers' unions have totally removed the embargo on the conveyance of coal which will now be handled for all purposes.

LONDON, May 31. There is some anxiety as to the position of British_troops arriving in Upper Silesia as the Polish insurgents have apparently established occupa- tion with French connivance, and though the Germans have been exhorted to hold their hand there is a danger of German and Polish incidents as as you were running away-No result of which the British may be forced to abandon their paserve attitude. Ko Tam bore out Ko Fat's evidence, The openly expressed anxiety of the Germans to help the British if the latter Mr. Hind: Ipat it to you that fail to restore order in the disputed area would cause a dangerous situation you were not carrying stones with your brother, Ko-Fat- but with first affecting the Entente.
