LONDON, May 6. An oficial return issued to day shows that 9,500,000 enlisted in the British armies during the war. The total casualties were 3,266,362. The figures analysed give the British Isles 6,211,427 enlistments, 743,702 deaths, 1,693,262 wounded, and 176,305 prisoners: Canada 683,170, entisments, 56,625 deaths, 149,732 wounded, and 3,754 prisoners; Australia 413,453 enlistments, 59,330 deaths, 152,171 wounded, and 4,084 prisoners; New Zealand 227,325 enlistments, 16,136 deaths, "40,729 wounded, and 502 prisoners; India 1,679,416 enlistments, 61,398 deaths, 70,859 wounded, and 11,070 prisoners; South Africa 136,373 enlistments and New Foundland! 9,859. The other colonies had 133,337 enlistments combined. Casualties for the last three were 3,832 dead, 1,513 wounded, and 1,718 prisoners.

The “cultured " pearl bubble has been thoroughly deflated by the statement of the gems section of the London Chamber of Commerce to the affect that they bave long been marketed. They are well known and have been sold as such. The statement declares that they are quite different in appearance from the oriental pearl. CAPTAIN N. G. MAJKE.

His many friends in Hongkong! will receive with regret the announce ment of the death in Anstraks of: Capt. N. G. Majer, formerly a well- koown figure in local shipping circles,

Capt. Majer was formerly employed by the Scottish Oriental Company whose interests were sald to a Ger-1 man company some 23 years ago, He later entered the business of Messrs. Moore and Symonds, ship chandlers, being subsequently a pilot for Hongkong harbour and in the employ of the Hongkong and Wham poa Dock Company. He served with several steamers and not long ago took a new ship, built in Shanghai, from Vladivostock with a large num ber of war refugees to Odessa.

The deceased was in England at the beginning of last year, returning to Hongkong in June, when he took over the command of the "Roberto Figueras, formerly the "Keys" now being operated by the Figueras Steamship Company, of which Messrs. Thoresen and Company-are the local agents. He took his ship to Australia and has since been voyaging between Australian ports and Noumes and other New Hebrides Islands..

Captain Majer's death took place on April 15 in a hospital where he had been admitted two days pre- viously suffering from a serious - ness. He leaves a widow and a son, at present at Home, to mourn his loss.

STITUTION IN JAPAN,

Tokyo, April 29-The first medical laboratory ever established in Japan for the combined purpose of theore tical and clinical reseach will be baut close by the famous Sato Juntendo Hospital at Ochanomizu, Hongo, under the name of the Juntende Medical Laboratory.

The building will be two-storied, and constructed of reinforced con- crete, covering an area of“ some 300 tsubo. The work will be completed within this month at the cost of Y300,000, but the interval equip ment will not be complete for about twelve months.

The instrument which we know as the "barometer" is really nothing. more than a delicate bit of mechanism which registers changes in the pres sure of the air which, normally at sea level, is about 14 or 15 pounds to the square inch or approximately a ton to the square foot, decreasing gradually in direct proportion to the altitude. When the pressure of the envelope of air which surrounds the earth is normal, the barometer, atj sea level, indicates 30, which is, of course, an entirely arbitrary mark, just as the degrees" on & ther mometer are arbitrary. But the | barometer -“falls" or rises-the needle indicating a lesser or greater pressure according to the change in this pressure of the air.

A "falling barometer,” therefore, is a pretty certain indication of storing weather, for storms are nothing more than disturbances of the atmosphere which comes as the 'result of a hollow or dent in the air-envelope. Just as a wave is usually preceded and followed by a depression or valley. there is generally a

" fil or high- pressure area in front of and behind these low-pressure storm centres, and the tendency of nature toward equalization. Is such, that a rising. barometer, provided the rise is sudden and abnormal, will frequently indicate a storm, which may be some distance away and which may not arrive until the barometer needle has drop- ped below the average figure.

A falling barometer, therefore, usually indicates snow or rain,"ac cording to the season, while one that is normal or rising, shows that the weather will probably be far until some further change is indicated--- for the shadow of a storm is ap- parent in the air pressuré some timë” before the actual disturbance makes its appearance.
