HELICOPTERS" FLYING.

"NEW" TYPE OF MACHINE. Paris is talking to-day about a new fying vehicle, the story of whose invention reads like a romance. It is called the "Helicoptere," and we are told that the inventor, M. Pateras- Pescara, a Barcelona engineer, made his discovery in the Sante prison at two o'clock in the morning. It is claimed for this new flying vehicle, in which the French Government is in- |terested, for it will senda technical mis- sion to Barcelona to witness the trials that passengers can des cend from the air with the same com- fort as though they were sitting in armchairs. The invention consiste of an axle fixed to a moter which is placed in the vehicle. The axle sets în motion sets of propellers, one set turning one way, one another. The vehicle rises vertically from the ground; it can dip in every direction, remain immobile în space, and des- cend like an aeroplane with engine stopped.

M. Pateras Pescara, a nationalised Argentine, who married an Austrian princess, has to leave Italy when that country entered the war. He came

over 130-miles an hour. He had had trouble with the diplomatists, and was watched by the inter- national police. It was tried recently, and it is said that the propellers worked admirably. Official trials will take" place in the

pre sence of French aeronautical experts, and if they are satisfactory, it is France that will obtain possession of the frst machine.

With reference to this claim of the Barcelona, inventor, it may be point- ed out that there is nothing what- *beli- ever new about the idea of a |coptere, ie, a machine capable of rising from the ground by the action of horizontally-placed propellers. The plan, in fact, is one of the oldest in the history of seronautical theory and experiment, and has been put forward more than once during the past quarter of a century. Whether M. Pescara has succeeded in surmounting the difficulties bereto- føre encountered remains to be seen.
