ATHLETIC SPORTS.
ROYAL ARTILLERY.
YESTERDAY'S MEETING.
THE CHINA MAIL.
The annual athletic sports of the Royal Artillery were completed on the United Services Recreation Club ground at Kowloon yesterday. The competition was very keen, this being the first meeting of the Services in; the Colony since 1914.
The most interesting event of the afternoon was the Officers' 100 yards race. In this H.E. the Hon. Dr. Claud Severn, C.M.G. (Officer Ad- ministering the Government), and Major-General Sir G. M. Kirkpatrick, participated. The General had a good start and came very near to winning the race but the pace was a little too hot. When challenged some yards from home, he was unable to make the spurt, and the honours went to
Engineers.

One of the biggest fires which occurred in the F.MS in recent years was that which resulted in the com plete destruction of fourteen double fronted shop houses in Kuala Kang sar. The damage is conservatively, estimated at $150,000, out of which $74,000, was covered by insurance.
A warning has been issued by the Canton officials that any one found guilty of cutting and stealing telegraph wires will be tied to tele graph poles and shot. Complaints from the Telegraph Office have been made about the frequent cutting of tele. graph wires by natives along the Fast kiver and around Swatow. This has been interfering with the telegraph service and a request was wade to enforce strict laws to protect the line It. is reported that the natives often cut the tires and convert them into small shot for shooting purposes. The frequency of these complaints from the telegraph Office has aroused the officials to
enforce the new law.
