SNAKES FROM THE EAST. Standing on the wharf at. Bristol, I was watching the unloading of a fruit steamer. Dig bunches of ban- anas were being brought ashore, when suddenly one of the stevedores gave a yell and, shaking something off his sleeve, stamped on it vigorous- ly says a contributor in a Home

paper.

Curiosity impelled me to wak across to the spot and find out what had caused his alarm, and although the remains were fairly fat enough remained to show that the creature which the man had slain was a spider of a size and hairiness unknown in our temperate climate.

Making inquiries, I found that all reptiles arrive as stowaways in theic sorts of queer tropical insects and

fruit ships. There is a lot of cover in a big bunch of bananas and there is harbourage, too, in the prickly fans of pine apples and in the fibre or other packing used for lining

cases.

As for the cockroaches, they zrej very different indeed from the Eng- and of a beautiful leaf-green colour. Fish "black beetle." They are large You also get a yellowish sort, the odour of which is far from pleasant.

Lizards of various sorts are com-j monly found among the bananas. The cold does not suit them and they look dull and lifeless, although in their native beat they are very lively and most brilliant in colouring. All of them are perfectly harmless.

Tiny green tree frogs are imported with every cargo of bananas. These are provided with sucker-like feet. enabling them to climb up a smooth trunk or even a wall. They are creatures of the sun and do not long survive here unless placed in a hot- house.

Snakes are rarer, yet not so uncommon as might be supposed. Those that come with the fruit àre mostly small and harmless, but very ugly customers arrive at times in the timber ships, especially in cargoes of teak from the East.

I know of two cases in which cobras were found in the holds of timber ships arriving in London, No doubt they had been coiled in the heart, of some hollow log when swatig aboard..

The oddest stowaway of which I ever heard was an ichneumon, which was found in a bunch of Aspinwall bananas.The ichneumon is a weasel- like creature which resembles the mongoose in its habit of hunting and eating snakes.....
