Mr. Lloyd George emphasised the disastrous effects on the miners. Whole villages would become derelict and thousands of families would be deprived of the means of subsistence. He pointed out the calamitous results to the nation and said that it was the Government's duty to prevent a catastrophe, especially as it was increasingly clear that in some places organised bodies of miners were intimidating the mine officials engaged in preserving the vital assets of the community. For the first time in history the nation was confronted with an attempt to coerce it by the destruction of its resources. After referring to how the suspension of the transport services would accentuate the position the Premier made 30 annouement regarding the auxillary measures (cabled earlier) in Icluding an emergency force to be called the defence force.
