DIAMOND GUT DIAMOND.
BOGUS GOLD POR FALSE NOTES:
An amusing double ease of diamord cut diamond came to light in a far-: gery trial in Berlin: The defendants were charged with turning out large quantities of imitations of the fifty- mark note of Nov. 1918, which last itself admirably to falsification and has consequently been called in.. More than 11,000 of the wotes made by the gang were intercepted at "the counters of banks, post offices, and other public institutions,, but that was a mere trife in comparison with the output, which amounted. to a million marks a week. The defendants, however, found, as they thought, a magnificent opportunity of getting rid of their forgeries on the wholesale scale. In a cafe frequented, | by illicit traders they met a couple | of Russians, who let out that they were trying to
get rid of forty pounds of pure gold which had come into their bands. Very soon the two parties came to terms as to the price. The metal was produced and a sample taken and certified by a jeweller, and the Russians departed with their pockets stuffed full of flty-mark notes. The forgers then shared out kitchen the booty, weighing it on scales, and set off to turn it into genuine notes. Much to their chagrin, however, each one of them, when he presented his precious metal to a dealer, was told cuntecoptuously that it was only brass.
