LONDON, Feb. 20. Sir Ross Smith, in an interview, said that the Australian flight had proved that the modern aeroplane. could go anywhere unhampered by extremes of heat or cold if properly handled, and was capable of draw- ing the Empire closer. Certainly the seroplane had a great future as a ̧ CAT- rier of merchandise.

He regretted that civil aviation in England had not gone ahead more, but he thought that the present de- pression was temporary. The public did not fly because they regarded fly ing as a dangerous sport and they lacked "confidence.

He added: "There is nothing to be afraid of. It is as proper a means of locomotion and transport as motor- ing and sailing.”
